Abstract:

Children with autism face a number of challenges, not least making and sustaining relationships with others. They may fail to engage in social behaviours that allow bonding with others, such as eye contact, turn-taking or smiling. In addition, they may display other behaviours that other people perceive to be strange and frightening, such as repetition, rigidity and aggression. Interventions such as social skills training and behavioural interventions have been adapted to try to help people with autism engage more effectively with those around them. This book offers one approach to this. It begins with an overview of therapies and interventions that have been proposed for people with autism and the evidence base for each of these, before introducing applied behaviour analysis (ABA) in some detail.
